3rd Leg: Bernalda > Craco

The name of Bernalda is now linked to that of Italian-American filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, whose paternal grandparents were from this town in the Matera region, to which he often returns.

In the heart of the Ionian coast, a short walk from the golden beaches of the Metaponto hamlet and the wonders kept between the archaeological area and the Metaponto archaeological museum, Bernalda is a stop that those who choose to take a trip to Basilicata must include in their itinerary, especially in summer.

Located between the Bradano and Basento rivers, it is characterized by a historic center that rises on a steep plateau towards the sea and from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea and the nearby Metaponto hamlet. Taking a walk through the village, along Corso Umberto I, among the stately buildings, you will find yourself in front of the imposing Palazzo Margherita. The owner of this 19th-century historic residence is none other than Francis Ford Coppola, who bought it and transformed it into a 5-star resort.
